Great Bay Ice

From  the shore of Durham Point, New Hampshire Great Bay stretches out and wraps around you. The narrow bays stay ice locked longer than the large open areas where the ice cakes float by silently in the tides that barely create a ripple as they go in and out.

Chauncey Creek Pines

The tide helps break up the ice in Chauncey Creek on Kittery Point. The open water reflection of the pines creates a dynamic contrast to all the winter white.

Dingy

Sunny Harbor, 6x8 watercolor

When I am visiting family in Florida during the winter I find it hard to believe the sun and warm water are real. Sarasota bay is a gorgeous green color and the water is so clear.

This man and his dog live in his boat moored for the winter in Sarasota, Florida. Its not unusual to see sailors from our northern climate sail south to spend the winter in a nice warm port.

Island Weather

Island Weather 6x8 watercolor

The weather on the coast of Maine is different depending where you are.  It can be sunny up on the mainland at the top of the peninsula and showering over an island down in one of the bays.

I paint in Friendship, Maine in the off season, when there are no summer people around. I'm noticed by the locals as I'm the only person on the docks. Everybody else is going out on their boats.

Lobster Boats in Perkins Cove

Boats in the Cove, 6x8, watercolor

Perkins Cove is a narrow deep cove with boats moored in neat rows. It is a very orderly harbor and its busy year round. They have their own little ice breaker to keep the water open so the boats can go out on cold winter mornings.

Boat in the Channel: Cape Porpoise

In the Channel, 6x8 watercolor

The channel in the harbor at Cape Porpoise is so narrow the lobster boats have to moor in a line. Its only deep enough in one area to moor a boat at low tide.

Maine: By the Dock

In a Row, 6 x 8  Watercolor, 98 lb aquarelle

I am so lucky, I live in southern Maine on the seacoast. A favorite spot in my neighborhood is the cozy hamlet of Cape Porpoise. It's a small harbor that is active year round. In the summer all the cottages are full of happy vacationers.  At this time of the year it's just me, the fishermen and their boats. I made this watercolor sketch looking down at the rowboats on the dock at Cape Porpoise, Maine.
