Summer Meadow

Laudholm Farm is a lovely old home on acres of meadows and forest on the southern coast of Maine.  The house and barns sit high on a hill overlooking the marshes and the sea. I paint here in every season of the year.

Island in the Lake

The mountains of New Hampshire are full of beautiful lakes. Lake Wentworth is one of these little jewels. The islands on the lake at sunset looked mysterious and dark. The sky and lake were lit up with glorious sunset color.

Clouds over the Marsh

The clouds were clearing over the marshes after a summer storm blew through. I was lucky enough to be in Ogunquit at sunset just in time to catch the fast moving light and colors as the clouds raced out to sea.

Azaleas in Bloom

Its spring and its early this year. The azaleas were just beginning to bud and now 2 days later they are bursting out! I'm going to have to get out there and paint them again! Time is fleeting. The flowers are here, then they are gone in what seems like a day.

The Pines, Look Park

I grew up in a town in western Massachusetts where there is a lovely park I spent a lot of time in as a child.  On a late summer trip last year I painted in the park near an out door theater named "The Pines". Its named after these amazing, huge, old pines that were planted all around it.  These are beautiful majestic trees. Under the pines you feel like you are in a cathedral.

Lakeside Reflections

On my painting trips through western Massachusetts there is a tiny lake in a state park I love to visit. I used to picnic here with my family when I was little. It hasn't changed at all. its still wild and rustic. It is in a remote area and always quiet after Labor Day. The cottages across the lake are empty and I have the place to myself. I love sitting on the shore in the warm late summer sun painting.

Williamsburg Barns

The farms in the the Berkshires of western Massachusetts have often been in the same families for generations. The buildings and land have been well cared for. The sugar maples and oaks planted many years ago stand tall next to the stone walls. The barns on this farm looked lovely in the late light.

Nor'easter Carvers Harbor

I sat in my car at the public wharf while a Nor'easter hit Vinalhaven, Maine.  All the boats were at their moorings in Carver's Harbor. No one was going out in this weather. The ferry service to the mainland was canceled. I was happy as a clam painting in my sketchbook in the dry front seat of my car. The colors of the islands, sky and water were subtle and beautiful!

Fryeburg Farm

Every summer I spend two long weekends painting in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. I drive all over the mountains painting on both sides of the ridges. When I travel to Evans' Notch the road heads east and crosses the state line into Maine. I drive through the lovely farming town of Fryeburg to reach the notch. Farms like this one are found in the valley along the Saco River as it flows through the fertile fields of town.

Foggy Day Kittery Point Harbor

Kittery Point Harbor is in a great spot. Its on the southern border of Maine, near the mouth of the Piscatisqua River across from the small island of New Castle, NH. The harbor is located in the curve of the land so all the big ship traffic is way out in the river a distance away.

Azalea Buds

The Azalea buds are getting ready to open! The bush is on the east side of the house.  It catches those chilly breezes off the ocean so they need a few really warm days to encourage them to flower.

Portsmouth, NH is a seacoast town in my neighborhood. Its full of great old historic neighborhoods, old streets and a working harbor. This was painted near Puddle Dock in the old part of Portsmouth Harbor.

Carvers Harbor, Vinalhaven

I took a trip to Vinalhaven, Maine in the fall after the tourists left. The place is totally empty off season. It is real Maine. Granite quarries made this island prosperous. Now only fishermen and their families live there.  The town has many houses that are only used in the summer.  The harbor is full of working boats all year.

The Yellow House, Carvers Harbor

A yellow house sits right on the edge of Carvers Harbor in Vinalhaven, ME. I painted this scene from the front seat of my car in a Nor'easter.  The rain was blowing sideways. It was like having buckets of water thrown at you. The yellow looked cheerful in all the gray that filled the sky and water.

Little Angel

Once a month a local group of artists gather for a figure session. There was a young girl modeling at the session I attended. She would hold 20 minute poses. I sketched and painted with watercolors to capture her quickly. When she appeared with a crown of tiny stars I thought she looked like an angel !

Lobster Boats Pine Point

At the northern end of the Scarborough Marsh is the community of Pine Point. It has a quiet little harbor with a small fleet of lobster boats and a Lobstermen's cooperative.  To the north you can look up the coast to Prouts Neck where Winslow Homer lived and painted.

Ogunquit River

The Ogunquit River flows down out of the forest to the marshes behind the barrier dune on the ocean.  It  is part of the vast patchwork of marshes that fill the coast line along the southern coast of Maine. This region of Maine has sandy beaches, marshes and crashing surf.  Farther north at Cape Elizabeth, ME the rocky coast dominates and the peninsula and island region starts.

1960 Cadillac Convertible

This convertible was so big and shiny it looked like a boat. It was a classic cruiser with a hot pepper red interior. It was a smooth, heavy, low rider.

Model T

It was a warm day at the Parsonsfield Seminary antique car show but the car owners didn't care.  They drove to Maine from Connecticut in old cars that wouldn't go faster than 50 mph.

When I spotted this classy convertible parked under the trees I had to paint it.  I could just imagine the look of the original couple who drove it.

Roosters

The roosters in this backyard "poultry herd" were quite majestic.  They had the most dramatic tail feathers I'd ever seen on a rooster.  I think they are well fed!

Speckled Chickens

I was in the middle of this small herd of speckled chickens and they never stopped moving!  They had the most beautiful multi colored feathers. I wonder what color their eggs are?

Marginal Way, Ogunquit

This lovely spot is in my neighborhood. I live a short drive through the woods to Ogunquit.  When I was 13 did I ever think I would end up living near my favorite beach?  The marginal way is one of the popular walks in southern Maine where you can get right out there on the rocks next to the crashing surf.

Vermont Grazing

These cows were in North Bennington. Vermont cows are the best. Maybe its because there are more cows than people? I don't know if that is true anymore. The small dairy farms are disappearing. Support our small farms! Eat local!

North Bennington, Vermont

The pastures are open and the views are endless in this south west corner of Vermont.  On  one farm I drive across the field to the top of the hill and see rolling hills and farms in every direction.

Every year I make several painting trips to Vermont. I found this farm in North Bennington, VT on the NY border.  The owner lets me drive up into his high open pastures to paint. The views are magnificent.

Low Tide on Salmon Falls River

The Salmon Falls River is tidal as it winds through the hills and woods of southern Maine before it empties into the Piscatisqua River. This is a favorite place for me to go and watch the migrating birds pause on their way to their summer homes.
