Miles of marshes stretch up the southern coast of Maine. All types of animals live here and thousands of birds use this region as a rest stop on their annual north and south migrations.

The west side of Drakes Island is edged with acres of marshes. Here the land is protected from the wind off the Atlantic. Its quiet here and the sound of the surf is distant. Here beach roses, meadows and small pines flourish.

These chickens were very happy birds.  They ran up to their owner when she brought us out to see them like little puppy dogs, not chickens !  They then proceeded to run all over the lawn searching out bugs and other little things to eat.  They never stopped moving. It was a challenge to paint them as they ran around!

Laudholm Farm is a lovely old home on acres of meadows and forest on the southern coast of Maine.  The house and barns sit high on a hill overlooking the marshes and the sea. I paint here in every season of the year.  

At the Dock

Docks are located all along York River on its way to the harbor. Some of the lobstermen sell their freshly caught lobsters right off their docks. The lobster is so fresh and the price is great !

Most of the docks are empty in early spring at York Harbor. A working lobster boat and a covered sail boat are the only boats at the dock.

Strawberry Island

Strawberry Island is a tiny island off the coast of Kennebunk, Maine.  At low tide you can walk out to the island on a natural bridge of stones.

Rocks and Seaweed

The rocky outcroppings along the Maine coast are covered in seaweed below the high tide mark. When the tide is low hundreds of rocky ledges appear edged in warm rich colorful seaweed.

The Marginal Way links the village of Ogunquit to Perkins Cove with a high path along the edge of the water.  When you stand in Perkins Cove you can look north up the rocky coast to Ogunquit.

Rockport has a small cozy harbor.  On this spring day it was bustling with activity as the sail boats were launched joining the lobster boats that worked all winter.

As the weather warms up the sail boats are taken out of winter storage and returned to their summer moorings.  New sails are installed and the boats are readied for the summer season.
